Bushnell Takes Opening Night Win

    Story by Josh Reynolds

Stuart, IA (May 5) – Stuart Speedway kicked off season 56 with winners new and old taking home the hardware, but this time it was on a Friday Night! With the Iowa State Fair Speedway closing down management made the decision to switch from Sunday to Friday, and we couldn’t be more excited about the change! Chase Rudolf, John Gill, Jamie Schirm, Nick Roberts and Cory Bushnell took the wins on Pea Ridge Products Night at the Races.

Dylan Petersen and Dusty Masolini led the IMCA Northern SportMods to the green flag, but they wouldn’t make it far as Petersen spun in turn one to bring out the caution. Chase Rudolf inherited the pole position and he would make the most of it to lead the first four laps over Masolini, Kody Havens and Austin Luellen. Another yellow for Brandon Bach on lap four proved to be the last stoppage for the SportMods and Rudolf was up to the task as he went on to the win. Masolini finished second with Luellen third, John Watson fourth and Lynn Brockett fifth. Masolini and Jerry Hinton were the heat race winners.

IMCA Sport Compacts were up next with Kolby Sabin and Dustin McGee on the front row. John Gill used his third starting spot to jump to the lead on lap one and he never looked back in taking the win. Bobby Key took home second with Curtis Miller third, Scott Ellis fourth and McGee fifth. Miller and Dustin Thompson were the heat race winners.

Aaron Rudolph and Jamie Schirm drew the first two chips for the IMCA Hobby Stocks, and Schirm wasted no time in getting out to the lead. Brandon Cox, Rudolph and Korbin Nourse followed in Schirm’s tire tracks until a caution came out for Jack Phillips and Todd Bass coming together in turn 2 on lap nine. When the action picked back up it was Schirm out front with Cox closing as the laps wound down. The leaders took the white flag and Cox nosed under Schirm, but just as he did the handle went away and he spun to the infield coming out of turn 2. Schirm went on to the win with Rudolph second and Jamie Songer third. Solomon Bennett rebounded nicely after a lap 2 spin to finish fourth and David McQuiston crossed the line in fifth. Bennett and Schirm were the heat race winners.

The VanEatonville Mafia pulled chips 1-2 to put Jeff James and Todd VanEaton on row one for the IMCA Modified feature. James led at the start with Nick Roberts and VanEaton close behind. Roberts moved past James to take the lead on lap nine and Luellen jumped to third on lap ten. As Roberts stretched the lead a bit Luellen continued to make gains and got past James on lap sixteen. After a stellar SportMod career Luellen was looking to come up with his first feature win in a Modified, but it was not to be as Roberts would go on to take the win. Luellen finished second with James third, VanEaton fourth and Josh Gilman fifth. Luellen and Matthew Meinecke were the heat race winners.

Last but not least, the IMCA Stock Cars came to the track with Michael Murphy and Brandon Pruitt on the front row. Pruitt wouldn’t make it past the first lap as contact sent him around in turn four to bring out the yellow. Once the cars got going again it was Murphy leading with brother Trent Murphy in second and Josh Daniels third. Chris Pruitt powered his way to second just before a caution came out on lap six, but it would continue to be Murphy at the front once the green waved. Trent Murphy made it past his brother on lap nine to take the lead and at the halfway mark it was Trent Murphy, Fagan, Michael Murphy, Chris Pruitt and Cory Bushnell the top five. Bushnell began to flex his muscle a lap later by disposing of Chris Pruitt and Michael Murphy. Lap fourteen saw Bushnell pass Fagan and a lap later he would take the lead by passing Trent Murphy. Bushnell would go on to the feature win over Fagan, Trent Murphy, Chris Pruitt and Michael Murphy. Chris Pruitt and Michael Murphy were the heat race winners.

We’d like to thank all who came out to support the race track at our first event of the year. Next week will be First State Bank Night at the Races with our five regular classes in attendance. See you then!
