Hensel Takes First Hobby Win

Story by Josh Reynolds

Stuart, IA (May 15) – A windy and cool evening gave way to terrific racing and some repeat winners at Stuart Speedway! Josh May, Mike Nichols, Jake Benischek, Austin Luellen, Adam Hensel and Ricky Thornton Jr. took the wins on T&T Siding & Scott Concrete Night at the Races.

Mike Morrill and Josh May brought the MADCRA Mod Lites out for their feature with Morrill taking control on the top side. May followed suit for the first six laps and then switched it to the bottom. That was the turning point in the race as May moved into the lead on lap eight. May would go on to take the win over Morrill, Randy Bryan, Cory Sauerman and Erin Turner. Morrill was the heat race winner.

IMCA Stock Cars were next up with Derrick Rohe and Josh Daniels on the front row. Third starting Brandon Pruitt moved to the front on lap one with Marcus Fagan and Daniels in tow. Week one winner Mike Nichols moved into third on lap five, second on lap eight and to the lead as he rocketed by Pruitt on the top side on lap nine. The battle was on for second after that between Fagan, Pruitt and Brian Blessington, but Nichols was too much for the field as he took the win – his 14th in a row to start 2016!!! Fagan won out in the battle for second with Pruitt third, Robert Merkle fourth and Blessington fifth. Daniels and Pruitt were the heat race winners.

Aaron Miller and Ralph Bunce were on the front row for the IMCA Sport Compacts, but it was fourth starting Jake Benischek taking the lead on lap one. Benischeck rode off into the sunset to take his second win in as many starts. John Gill came home second with Jacob Reiter third, Levi Heath fourth and Curtis Miller fifth. Reiter was the heat race winner.

IMCA Northern SportMods came out next with Dusty Masolini and Jerry Hinton on the front row. Kody Havens led lap one with Austin Luellen and Hinton close behind. Luellen used the bottom side of the track to take the lead on lap six with a caution slowing the field a lap later. Once the cars fired back up it was Luellen out front and Clint Luellen getting past Havens on lap eight. Austin would go on to take the win with Clint finishing second, Jake McBirnie third, Havens fourth and Justin Addison fifth. Chase Rudolf, Austin Luellen and Havens were the heat race winners.

Keith Burg and David Simpson brought out the IMCA Hobby Stocks next, and after three caution flags before a lap was completed it was Jamie Songer leading lap one with Adam Hensel and Burg in tow. Songer looked to go the distance, but on lap twelve took the bottom side around a lap car. Hensel pounced on the top side and took over the lead. Hensel went on to take his first ever Hobby Stock win with John Watson second, Jamie Schirm third, Burg fourth and Songer fifth. Simpson and Aaron Rudolph were the heat race winners.

Last but not least, IMCA Modifieds came to the track with Shane Demey and Dylan Book on the front row. Demey led lap one, but Ricky Thornton Jr powered to the front on lap two. Demey and Tim Ward took turns in the second spot, but no one was stopping Thornton Jr on this night as he went on to take the win. Demey finished second with Kyle Brown third, Jesse Hoeft fourth and Ward fifth. Demey, Josh Gilman and Jacob Murray were the heat race winners.

We’d like to thank all who came out to support the race track at our second event of the year. Next week will be Casey's General Stores & Luellen Farms Night at the Races. We will have our 5 regular IMCA classes and the Heartland Micro Sprints will be back in town! See you then!
