Luellen Takes First Mod Checkers at SIS

Story by Josh Reynolds

Stuart, IA (June 23) – The racing and weather combined for an amazing evening Friday night at Stuart Speedway! Austin Luellen, John Gill, Marcus Fagan, Jamie Schirm and Clint Luellen took the wins on Scott Concrete/Luellen Farms Night at the Races.

After a week off for a rainout the IMCA Northern SportMods came out first with Bryce Allen and Josh Cooper leading the field to the green flag. Allen would show the way until Cooper moved by on lap five. Austin Luellen got himself into second on lap eight and two circuits later he passed Cooper for the lead. Chase Rudolf made the pass on Cooper for second on lap twelve, but he ran out of laps as Luellen went on to the win. Rudolf finished second with Dylan Petersen third, Cooper fourth and John Watson fifth. Rudolf and Cooper were the heat race winners.

Hunter Patrick and Landon White brought out the IMCA Sport Compacts to green with Curtis Miller nailing the start from his seventh starting position to lead lap one. Miller looked to check out on the field until a yellow flew for Bryson Rhamy on lap six. That caution brought John Gill up to the back bumper of Miller for the restart, and Gill took advantage and snagged the lead on lap eight. Gill led the remaining laps to pick up the win over Miller, White, Kolby Sabin and Scott Ellis. Miller and Gill were the heat race winners.

IMCA Stock Cars came out next with Brock Badger and Jordan Riesberg on the front row. Badger led at the start with Josh Daniels and Marcus Fagan in tow. Fagan moved into second on lap five and Badger spun from the lead a lap later to bring out the yellow. When the race resumed it was Fagan, Keith Simmons and Daniels at the front of the field. Chris Pruitt entered the top three on lap eleven from his last starting spot, but Fagan was checked out by that point and went on to the easy win. Simmons finished second, Pruitt third, Matthew West fourth and David Smith fifth. Cory Bushnell and Fagan were the heat race winners.

David McQuiston and Korbin Nourse brought out the IMCA Hobby Stocks next with Nourse leading lap one. Nourse went for a wild spin in turn two the next time around, giving the lead to Jack Phillips. Phillips held the top spot until Jamie Schirm went by on lap six, bringing Jamie Songer along with. Schirm and Songer led the field with last starting Eric Stanton making it to third on lap eleven. Songer spun in turn two to bring out the yellow and setting up a green-white-checkered finish. Schirm was up to the task and went on to the win. Stanton finished second with Aaron Rudolph third, Nourse rebounding to fourth and McQuiston fifth. Nourse and Songer were the heat race winners.

IMCA Modifieds came out for the last feature of the night with Matthew Meinecke and Randy Havlik on the front row. Clint Luellen came from his fourth starting spot to take the lead on lap one over Havlik and Josh Gilman. Gilman made it to second on lap four as Luellen continued to lead. Luellen would check out on the field and go on to his first ever Modified win at Stuart Speedway. Gilman finished second with Havlik third, Eric Elliot fourth and Jeff James fifth. Luellen made it a clean sweep by picking up the heat race win as well.

We’d like to thank all who came out to support the race track at our sixth event of the year. Next week will be National Investors Night at the Races with the Karl Chevrolet Dirt Trucks joining our five regular classes. See you then!
