Pospisil First to SLMR Checkers
Story by Josh Reynolds
Sunday saw the Malvern Bank Super Late Model Series come out to do battle at Karl Chevrolet of Stuart International Speedway. Winners for the night were Terry Bickford, Brayton Carter, Tad Pospisil, Luke Ramsey and Buck Schafroth.
Cullen Gossage would lead the first 3 times around for the IMCA Sport Compacts with Anthony Clark powering by to lead lap 4. Terry Bickford made it to 2nd a lap later and began tracking down Clark as the laps clicked off. When flagman Jamie Schirm gave the drivers the signal for 5 laps remaining it was Bickford taking control and he’d cruise the rest of the way to take the win. Clark finished second with Gossage third, Owen Richards fourth and Kolby Sabin fifth.
IMCA Northern SportMods came out next and it was Matt Avila setting the pace in the early going. Avila led Brayton Carter and Garrett Nelson through a rash of cautions, and it was the next to last one that bit Avila as Carter slid by on a restart to claim the lead. After the last yellow it was all Carter as he drove off to a 2.7 second lead and the win. Avila finished second with Kaylin Lopez third, Mitchell Morris fourth and Nelson fifth.
After a complete farming session, it was the Malvern Bank Super Late Models coming out to put on a show and that’s exactly what they’d do! Jesse Sobbing started out at the point until Justin Zeitner moved by and began to work his way through lap traffic. A tangle between Zeitner and a lapper brought the yellow out, and once they got going it was Tad Pospisil jumping at the chance to lead as he went to the top spot shortly after the green flag flew. The last yellow of the night came at the very end and set up a 2-lap dash to the finish, and it was Pospisil that was up to the challenge as he went on to the $3000 win. Sobbing finished second with Bill Leighton third, Zach Zeitner fourth and Jason Hahne fifth.
IMCA Hobby Stocks were up next and it was Danny Foster pacing the field on lap 1. Curt Reed powered past to lead lap 2 with Luke Ramsey and Rusty Bates not far behind. Skylar Pruitt went for a spin on lap 9 to bring out the yellow, and the restart saw the same top 3 staying in formation. That lasted until the white flag lap as Ramsey eased into the lead and looked to get the win. Pruitt and Solomon Bennett tangled in turn 3 to bring out the last caution of the race, but it didn’t deter Ramsey as he drove a smooth last 2 laps to take the checkers. Reed finished second with Bennett third, Bates fourth and Jared Smith fifth.
Last up on the night’s racing was the IMCA Stock Cars and they would have a finish to remember! Michiah Hidlebaugh led the first 4 circuits until Casey Woken got by just before the yellow came out. Woken would drive right up against the wall, leading the race while Buck Schafroth marched toward him. After a lap 10 yellow Schafroth took advantage to get to second with Woken still out front. Schafroth threw a couple of sliders at Woken, but each time would get crossed back over as Woken held the lead. When the white flag came out it was still Woken leading, but he got a little too high and into the cushion as Schafroth took advantage on the bottom side. Woken drove it deep into turns 3-4 but Schafroth had the advantage and snagged the win at the line. Woken settled for second with Austin Bouzek third, Hidlebaugh fourth and Troy Jerovetz fifth.
We would like to thank all who came out to support the race track at our sixth event of the year. Our next race will be on June 21, we’ll have some weekly racing with our 6 regular classes in action. See you then!
